On our flight from Montréal to Munich the plane was empty. Nevertheless the harsh Lufthansa check-in woman was adamant and we had to pay 180$ for three overweighting suitcases on a vacant plane.

So long, North America, and thanks for all the great, unforgettable, unique and bizarre places, people and moments; it was a fantastic journey. But after four months we are also happy to come home again.

Looking forward to, back in Germany:

German bread and beer

clean and palatable tap water

an opulent and very diverse breakfast (not exactly the same every day: eggs + toast + hashbrowns + sausage or bacon)

drinking coffee from cups made of china, with spoons made of metal

no more Oreo cookies (we ate tons of them when we were on the road)

broad Autobahn lanes with sleek asphalt you can drive fast on

no more driving slalom around trash and shredded truck tires on the highway

sleeping longer than 11 a.m. check out time

uncommercial TV channels

cell phone reception everywhere

the safe feeling knowing that other clients in e.g. a gas station very likely wear no guns

the safe feeling walking through a forest, not having to watch out for bears and moose

no mosquito hords in summer

non-air-conditioned rooms with fresh air thanks to openable windows

our Finomat!

Back home we will miss from North America:

the wide wilderness of Canada and Alaska

the amazing and manifold national park sceneries of the U.S.

the open, friendly and helpful way we were treated everywhere (not a matter of course in Germany, we try to take these good manners with us)

the cheap gas and the cheap Dollar

not one single traffic jam in Canada (except for Toronto to Niagara Falls on Canada Day)

the indication of the point of the compass direction on highway signs (in Germany they just display the names of larger cities, so you have to know the location of cities to find the right direction)

the many unlocked Wi-Fi spots

the feeling of being completely on your own with no cell phone reception in a radius of 1,000 km

the thrill of coming across a dangerous bear or moose in the woods

Oberto Beef Jerky, a delicious dried meat snack, available at any gas station

the bearable music on the radio (don’t switch on the radio when you go to Germany)

But most of all we will miss our new friend Angel from Seattle.
The last part from Boston to Montréal (500 km / 310 mi) seemed to us as short as driving home from Cologne to Düsseldorf (40 km / 25 mi). Perfect parting weather, it rained in torrents all day. It was one of about three rainy days in four month.

At the U.S. border crossing, near the Canadian Philipsburg resp. St. Armand in Quebec

Am US-Grenzübergang, nahe dem kanadischen Philipsburg bzw. St. Armand in Quebec

Again we elaborately had to explain to the friendly border official why and where Germans are driving a car with a U.S. license plate. She checked our passports and when she saw the moose stamp of Poker Creek, a far away Alaskan U.S. border control point, she “had to show it to her colleages” and moved away to the back for two minutes while a long line of cars was waiting behind us. They had never seen this stamp before here on the East Coast. We started our journey in Canada to enter the U.S.A. not until the second month of travel. Otherwise we would have had to go to Berlin to the U.S. embassy before to get visas for a stay longer than 90 days. Today we left the United States with a stamp 87 days old. Later at the Canadian border control they didn’t want to search our Ford as always. We passed several cars being turned inside out. Our fully packed filthy station wagon seemed daunting.

On the ground a red line goes through the old parts of Boston and leads along historical points of interest. For sure a good idea many tourists are thankful for. We tried to follow it but several times it just ended somewhere and we had so search the area for the continuing line.

Of all cities we’ve seen on our travel New York is the only one we would really like to live in. We both have been here several times before and it’s always different. There’s so much to see and the people are the most open minded in the world, they’ve seen it all. New York really is the city of cities, the hub of the world. After seeing that much of the U.S.A. we can surely say: New York is not America.

View from Brooklyn at Lower Manhattan, the south end of the peninsula which was colonised first in the 17th century. Before that Dutch maritime explorer Peter Minuit from Wesel (today Germany) acquired “Manahata” (means island of many hills) from native people in exchange for trade goods worth 60 guilders. The Dutch named the city New Amsterdam until it was conquered by the English in 1664 who renamed it to New York.

On the waterfront: 120 Wall Street (left) und Continental Center (right). The skyscraper canyon on the left is the Wall Street. At that level Dutch governor Petrus Stuyvesant had a rampart built in 1652, through whole Manhattan from the east to the west. The inhabited south ougth to be protected from indian attacks from the north. “Wal” is dutch for rampart, that’s where the name Wall Street comes from.

… the Dakota Building 72nd St / Central Park West, where John Lennon was shot on December 8, 1980. He lived here with Yoko Ono and today she still occupies the apartment. Boris Karloff, Judy Garland and Leonard Bernstein once had flats here, too. Polanski’s movie “Rosemarie’s Baby” takes place and was shot in the building. When it was built in 1880 it was the first New York building to house luxury apartments for more than one tenant. Before that wealthy people didn’t share one roof.

Zuvor wohnten Wohlhabende ausschliesslich alleine in Ihren Häusern.
