Day 106: Smoky Mountains

From Servierville we went to the neighBORING Pigeon Forge close to the tourist center Gatlinburg at the edge of the Smoky Mountain National Park, all in Tennessee. The dense woodlands of the Smokies produce a high humidity. They’ve got their name from the veils of haze you often see in the hills.

Von Servierville fuhren wir ins benachbarte Pigeon Forge kurz vor der Touristenhochburg Gatlinburg am Rande des Smoky-Mountain-Nationalpark, alles noch in Tennessee. Die Vegetation in den Smoky Mountains ist mit fast 100% Bewaldung so üppig, dass man wegen der hohen Luftfeuchtigkeit oft Dunstschleier in den Hügeln sieht. Daher auch der Name.

The city of Pigeon Forge is filled with the worst touristic entertainment trash you can imagine. A bit like the Canadian Niagara on the Falls. Many single attractions unite as a motley junk Disneyland, offering everything for a day without the unbearable nature nearby. In Gatlinburg we slowly squeezed through the small town in a single lane autocade. Gatlinburg also has too many tourists but it’s not as ugly as Pigeon Forge and scenically pretty surrounded by the Smoky Mountains.

Die Stadt Pigeon Forge ist – ähnlich wie das kanadische Niagara on the Falls – vollgestopft mit dem schlimmsten Touristenunterhaltungsmüll, den man sich vorstellen kann. Die Stadt ist ein aus vielen Einzelattraktionen zusammengewürfeltes Trash-Phantasialand, das dem geneigten Amerikaner alles bietet, um nicht die Natur des nahegelegenen Nationalparks ertragen zu müssen. In Gatlinburg drückten wir uns lange in einer ewigen Autokolonne durch den sehr kleinen Ort. Gatlinburg ist zwar auch touri-überladen, aber optisch nicht so schlimm wie Pigeon Forge und am Rand des Nationalparks schön gelegen in den Smoky Mountains.

Blue Ridge Parkway, Smoky Mountains, North Carolina

We left the cities behind and drove through a profuse vegetation that reminds of the German flora. After our trip this was unaccustomed to us. The closer we get to the East Coast, the more the nature looks like Central Europe.

Lässt man die Städte hinter sich, durchfährt man eine saftige Landschaft, die an deutsche Flora erinnert. Nach unserem bisherigen Trip ist das ungewohnt. Je weiter wir uns der Ostküste nähern, desto mehr erinnert die Natur an Zentraleuropa.

We drove the 755 km (469 miles) long, winding Blue Ridge Parkway for some hours. After dusk we changed to the freeway.

Wir fuhren einige Stunden den kurvigen, insgesamt 755 km langen Blue-Ridge-Parkway bevor wir in der Dämmerung auf den Freeway wechselten.

The national park is divided in two halfs by the border to North Carolina. Crossing it we switched a time zone for the last time. Now we have EST again – Eastern Standard Time (Germany -6h).

Der Nationalpark wird zur Hälfte geteilt durch die Grenze zu North Carolina, bei deren Überquerung wir zum letzten Mal die Zeitzone wechselten. Jetzt haben wir wieder EST – Eastern Standard Time (Deutschland -6h).
