From Greybull we went further east through the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming. Finally autumn!

Where the forest fire (was) stopped
Bis wo der Wald brannte
Trees and bushes just left behind black blots.
Wo schwarze Flecke sind standen Bäume oder Sträucher.
At over 9,000 feet it was quite frosty at 27°F (-3°C).
Auf knapp 3000 Metern Höhe war die Landschaft bei -3°C von Reif überzogen.
We arrived at our destination: the Devil’s Tower in the north east of Wyoming, near Gilette.
Das war unser Ziel: der Devil’s Tower im Nordosten Wyomings, bei Gilette.
Regrettably we didn’t see any rattlesnakes…
Klapperschlangen haben wir leider keine gesehen…
… but we saw no less dangerous rabbits, that jump out of crevices to bite their victims to death.
… dafür aber nicht minder gefährliche Kaninchen, die aus Felsspalten hervorspringen um ihre Opfer totzubeissen.
Approximately 60 million years ago there was a high plateau here and the Devil’s Tower was a magma stream to the surface.
Vor ca. 60 Millionen Jahren war hier noch ein Hochplateau und der Devil’s Tower ein Magmastrom zur Oberfläche.
The magma solified and cracks formed four- to seven-sided columns. The tallest (some more than 600 feet) and widest (10 to 20 feet) of it’s kind in the world.
Das Magma erstarrte und Risse bildeten vier- bis siebeneckige Säulen. Es sind die größten ihrer Art weltweit: teilweise über 180 Meter hoch und drei bis sechs Meter dick.
The surrounding high plateau eroded away since then, only the more durable solidified magma remained. Since it’s designation as the first U.S. national monument in 1906, no column part broke off.
Das umgebende Hochplateau erodierte zwischenzeitlich, nur das beständigere, erstarrte Magma blieb stehen. Mindestens seit seiner Ernennung zum ersten U.S. National Monument im Jahre 1906 ist kein Säulenteil abgebrochen.
