Day 31: Carmacks, Dawson City

Saturday, 28. July 2007, Yukon, Canada.

We are writing this in Anchorage after travelling through Alaska without any internet access for the last week…

Throwing a message in a bottle into the Yukon River, looking forward to somebody answering. Perhaps it makes it to the Bering Sea.

We were passing lots of dusty parts of the road and endless burnt woods along the Klondike-Highway.

Five Finger Rapids. These rocks in the Yukon River offered a difficult task to the captains of the paddle wheel steamers taking thousands of prospectors up to Dawson City.

Amazing names on the gravestones (right picture). It is common to put the used gold pan on the dead persons grave (left picture).

During the time of the gold fever there were stormy affairs in and around Dawson City. We guess that the woman belonging to the grave on the left side has something to do with a horizontal acquisition and her death may be caused by syphilis. On the right side: the grave of the founder of Alaska’s capital Juneau. Probably this is the only capital in the world you can only get by airway or waterway.

On the Midnight Dome, a mountain top where you have a brilliant view over Dawson City and the Yukon.

The Westminster Hotel – across the street from ours – is the oldest but not the quietest place in town, says their flyer. Thanks to the all night Country Karaoke Show we didn’t sleep that well. This picture was taken at 1:30 a.m. and at 3 a.m. sunrise began.
