Cathedral of St. John the Divine, 1047 Amsterdam Avenue, north east of Central Park at the border to Harlem. Two weeks ago the annual animal blessing took place here. Since 1984 people bring their pets, mostly dogs, but also birds, rabbits, porcupines, sheep, reindeer and horses. Even dromedars and camels got their blessing here.

Often seen in New York: a parking lift (Warren Street / W Broadway). New York City has a big parking problem. Parking in the streets is free everywhere but there is just too few space. Furthermore every side of a street is cleaned twice a week at different times and you have to move your car away. Many people hire somebody to do this: Before the street cleaning car comes, all cars are parked in the second row on the other side and back afterwards. After two days we had enough of this procedure. For 30$ per day we moved our car to an underground garage. At night these valet parking lots are fully packed with cars up to the entrance. You leave your car and the key at the gate, when you need it again you have to call one hour before. Your car is searched and relieved then from the closely crammed auto sardines can. Visiting Manhattan by car isn’t fun.

„The Sphere“ in Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan. The golden globe by German sculptor Fritz Koenig once stood on the plaza between the World Trade Center towers. It was heavily damaged when the towers collapsed, inside the torn open sphere pieces of wreckage of the planes were found. In 2002 the sculpture was placed here as a temporary memorial.

  1. I love your pictures especially your capture of the Empire State Building, you should have visited the Statue of Liberty as this one if not the most famous attraction in NY.

  2. “Visiting Manhattan by car isn’t fun.”

I’m with you on this one. GPS doesn’t work very well in Manhattan either. The tall buildings get in the way big time.

  3. Wow! Thank you for posting so many breath taking photos! I used to live in New York and you aren’t kidding about how tough it is to find a parking spot. I finally totally gave up and actually sold my car and bought an electric bicycle! Tough as heck in winter but delightful in spring and fall. Thanks again for the cool pics!
