Since today we had a new passenger: a bobble head armadillo. We saw plenty of them run over in Texas and Oklahoma. Alive they rummage the ground for bugs and are often seen as vermin. We were sniggered at when asking for a breeding station or a petting zoo to see an armadillo alive.
Ab heute hatten wir einen neuen Mitfahrer: ein Wackel-Gürteltier. Wir sahen viele überfahrene in Texas und Oklahoma am Strassenrand. Gürteltiere durchwühlen den Boden nach Käfern und werden hier als Landplage angesehen. Unsere Frage, wo man denn Gürteltiere lebendig sehen könnte (Zuchtstation, Streichelzoo…) wurde deshalb meist belächelt. Ist wohl so als würde man in Deutschland nach einer Maulwurfaufzuchtstation fragen.
Today we passed the texan ‘panhandle’, the rectangular region in the north of Texas. This picture was taken in the small town of Sayre, already in Oklahoma. Most cities look like that in this area.
Wir durchfuhren heute den texanischen „Panhandle“, den Pfannenstiel. So wird der schmale Landstrich nördlich des breiten Rests von Texas genannt. Dies ist schon Sayre in Oklahoma. Alle Orte sahen hier so aus.

IHOP – International House Of Pancakes – Oklahoma City. We ordered two standard stacks of pancake that had not much in common with European pan cakes. As everywhere else they were thick and mealy. Waffles taste exactly the same here, they seem to use the same batter for both. You pour syrup over a pancake and it’s soaked in immediately. But it still tastes dry and mealy. The slogan of the chain is “Come hungry, leave happy”. The former we did, the latter not.
IHOP – International House Of Pancakes – Oklahoma City. Wir bestellten zwei handelsübliche Stapel Pfannkuchen. Mit europäischen Pfannkuchen haben diese hier nicht viel gemein. Wie überall sonst auf unserer Reise ist der Teig dick und mehlig und schmeckt genauso wie hiesige Waffeln, für die anscheinend der gleiche Teig benutzt wird. Zuckersirup soll man darüber kippen, der Pfannkuchen saugt ihn schnell auf und ist danach noch genauso mehlig. Der Werbespruch der Kette ist „Komm hungrig, geh glücklich“. Ersteres taten wir, letzteres nicht.
