A lucky instinctive decision lead us over the very scenic Highway 37a to Stewart at the end of Portland Canal at the Alaskan border.

From Stewart we made a trip to Alaskan Hyder nearby, an almost ghost town. It’s the most southern town of Alaska that you can go to by car. The road from Stewart is the only one that leads to Hyder. There even is no border control when driving into Hyder. Entering the town the asphalt ends.

Beyond Hyder we went to the Fish Creek Wildlife Observation Site. Loads of salmon come here in this time of the year to spawn. That’s why you can often watch bears hunting fish here. Unfortunately this is no secret, there were hundreds of tourists here, see video below.

They have such leather shields quite often in Canada and Alaska. We think it’s a protection against cold in winter.

Wire net shield against stone chips. This would have been useful for us, too. We already have a small crack on our windscreen.

Leaving Hyder we had to pass a Canadian border control, but the bored border guard woman just waved us through. Short after that we were stopped by the Canadian police for a stop-and-search operation. They asked if we had fire arms or fish on board.

We were a bit wistful when leaving Alaska for the last time. The state is rough, dirty and cold, incredibly wide and the people are rough-and-ready but hearty. Alaska was fantastic.

  1. I am completely in love with your journey through the North.

I lived in Yellowknife, of the Northwest Territories for 3 years and never had the chance to go further West from there.

The photos are great and love the humor…one thing is still true, once above the 60th line, the characters get larger than life…

    Have a safe journey.
