In a reputedly french bakery chain store we fortunately met Phil from Baltimore. He offered to guide us through town. First he took us to Westminster Hall and Burying Ground, a former church and the burial place of Edgar Allen Poe.

In der Filiale einer vermeintlich französischen Bäckereikette lernten wir erfreulicherweise den in Baltimore lebenden Phil kennen. Er bot sich als Stadtführer an und führte uns zuerst zur Westminster Hall, einer ehemaligen Kirche mit angegliedertem Burying Ground, dem Friedhof auf dem Edgar Allan Poe beerdigt ist.

Visitors leave pennies to remind of the “Pennies for Poe” campaign. In 1875 local school teacher Sara Sigourney Rice raised money for this monument. Poe was re-buried here, his initial grave is on the same cemetary…

Besucher hinterlassen Pennies auf dem Stein in Gedenken an die „Pennies für Poe“-Spendenaktion der Lehrerin Sara Sigourney Rice, die 1875 Geld für diese Grabmahl sammelte. Poe wurde hierhin umgebettet, sein ursprüngliches Grab ist auf demselben Friedhof…

Every year since 1949 the unknown “Poe Toaster” visits the original grave marker, wearing black coat and hat. In the morning of January 19th, Poe’s birthday, the guy makes a toast of cognac and leaves three roses and a half-bottle of cognac. More of this story on >Wikipedia.

Jedes Jahr seit 1949 besucht der unbekannte „Poe Toaster“ (Poe-Zuproster) komplett in schwarz gekleidet die ursprüngliche Grabstätte am Morgen des 19. Januars, Poes Geburtstag. Er bringt mit einem Glas Cognac einen Trinkspruch aus auf Poe und hinterlässt drei Rosen und eine halbvolle Flasche Cognac. Mehr dazu auf >Wikipedia.

In the world famous Lexington Market of Baltimore (we didn’t know it); since 1782 food specialities are sold here. After that Phil took us on a light rail ride, to the outskirts of Baltimore. It’s always nice to talk to a local. And it’s so much more interesting than our travel guide. Perhaps we can return the favour as Phil is planning to visit Germany some day.

Im weltbekannten Lexington Market von Baltimore (wir kannten ihn nicht); seit 1782 werden in der Markthalle unterschiedlichste Essspezialitäten feilgeboten. Danach nahm uns Phil mit auf eine Strassenbahnfahrt in die Aussenbezirke Baltimores. Es ist immer nett mit einem Einheimischen zu sprechen – und weitaus interessanter als jeder Reiseführer. Vielleicht können wir uns eines Tages revanchieren, denn Phil plant einen Deutschlandbesuch.
