Our general procedure to find a cheap motel in a large city is to search Google-Maps for the area with the most motels. The names of the cheap ones are always the same. For example “motor inn” or “budget inn” work well for the search. Normally there are several cheap motels in one place and that’s where we went in Denver: Colfax Avenue. I had to do some graphic design jobs so we searched for a motel with complimentary internet access, a motel standard for the last weeks. This last night the quest for a motel was a real mess. The receptionists astonished shaked their heads, some even didn’t understand the word “internet”. Again the Twilight Zone sent us back in time by ten years. We didn’t expect that of Denver! We wasted hours checking 25 motels, all on Colfax, it was really strange. Finally someone told us that they had no internet connection on the whole damn street and sent us to another motel far away. We arrived after 2 a.m., I did my jobs the next day and that’s why we left the motel not until the late afternoon…
Unsere gängige Vorgehensweise in einer Großstadt ein billiges Motel zu finden ist mit Google-Maps den Ort zu suchen, an dem sich die meisten Motels befinden. Die billigen heissen immer gleich und häufen sich oft in einer Gegend. „Motor Inn“ oder “Budget Inn“ bringen eigentlich immer brauchbare Suchergebnisse, in Denver landeten wir so auf der Colfax Avenue. Ich musste noch ein paar Grafik-Jobs machen weshalb wir unbedingt Internet-Zugang brauchten, Standard bei den Motels der letzten Wochen. Gestern Abend war die Suche der blanke Horror. Die Motelrezeptionisten schüttelten nur verwundert die Köpfe, manche kannten gar das Wort „Internet“ nicht. Mal wieder hatte uns die Twilight Zone 10 Jahre in die Zeit zurückgeschleudert. Wir verschwendeten Stunden um 25 Motels abzuklappern, alle auf der Colfax Avenue, es war fast schon unheimlich. Das hatten wir noch nie erlebt und von Denver nicht erwartet. Irgendwann teilte uns endlich jemand mit, die gesamte verdammte Strasse sei nicht an’s Internet angeschlossen und schickte uns zu einem anderen, weit entfernten Motel. Wir kamen nach 2 Uhr nachts an, ich machte meine Jobs am nächsten Tag und deshalb verliessen wir das Motel auch erst am späten Nachmittag…

i should add that tully’s is a competitor of starbucks, also based out of seattle. but they are in major cities, and nearly on every corner across the street from starbucks. ‘keep your enemies closer’
It’s truly astonishing that broadband internet access is not universal in a city such as Denver. Even more surprising when you consider that you can quite easily access the internet from such isolated spots as the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.

I also find it amusing that broadband wifi is not common in denver. It is a famous US city and it is quite behind. However, in scotland, broadband wifi is used and it is like a countryside. Funny. The photos are great, though.
