On a parking lot in a backyard near the Hollywood Boulevard we got into a 50 Cent rehearsal for the “Curtis” album release concert on the next day, closed off behind a fence and guarded by police. We asked an officer if this really was 50 Cent. His answer: “Yeah and I’m 25 Cent.”

Los Angeles is the city of cars. With one registered automobile for every 1.8 people no other city in the world has more. Los Angeles itself doesn’t seem to be that big but the agglomeration with surrounding cities like Santa Monica, Hollywood, Pasadena, Malibu or Burbank is a Moloch connected by 27 freeways. A bit like the Rhein-Ruhr-Area where we come from. But our Autobahn usually doesn’t have 8 to 10 lanes. Driving a car in LA is no fun, nowhere on our whole journey traffic was faster and more stressful. Reminded of the German Autobahn, though they don’t drive as fast as in Germany. Furthermore the common north American practice of overtaking from the left AND right doesn’t contribute to relaxed driving. We rarely saw freeways free as on this sunday photo.

In the afternoon we went to Silicon Valley to the south east of San Francisco, where nearly all the big and famous computer companies were founded or have at least a branch. We came at the right time and ran into the Google employee summer fest with family fun and barbecue at Google’s headquarter in Mountain View. Some security guys recognized us as not working for Google and made us go, the campus is not open to the public.
In a 1 dollar self car wash in Carson City, Nevada. People on the sidewalk who knew about Burning Man often saluted us when we passed by with our dirty car. With removing the dirt we also lost our last mark of distinction from Burning Man. In the next days we constantly saw cars with black rock desert dust, also outside of Nevada.

From highway 395 we took a gravel road to ghost town Bodie in the very east of California. In 1859 Waterman S. Bodie found gold here and soon this was California’s wildest gold mining town. In it’s heyday the population was 10,000, the third largest after Sacramento and San Francisco and every day someone was murdered. It became a ghost town in 1930.

We left to Reno in the early afternoon, the few miles from our tent site to the highway took us about four hours. On the photo you can see the eight lane car line in the desert. We drove a long time in a slow motorcade on the single lane road, the only one through Black Rock desert. On the official Burning Man radio station they said we could either wait three hours in line today or six tomorrow. When we lost the radio signal after 20 miles it was like a final cut, we left the Nevada desert behind with melancholy. For four days Burning Man was like a different world, far diverse from the previous experiences of our journey. Because of the traffic delay we only made it to Carson City, Nevada, not that far away.
